The clinical dietitian works closely with the interdisciplinary health care team to provide nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy that are integrated and compatible with the patient's medical program goals and objectives. This includes application of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' (AND) Nutrition Care Process (NCP), including completion of the nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention, monitoring and evaluation of the patient's progress. In addition to developing and implementing nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy using established standards of care and practice protocols/guidelines, the dietitian is also responsible for managing resources in a cost-effective manner; participating in performance improvement efforts; and maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice.

Responsibilities
- Provides nutrition education to patients, patient's family and friends,
employees, physicians, health care staff, and the community.
- Provides written educational materials and other teaching aids that are
tailored to the specific needs to the patient.
- Considers the patient's level of comprehension, cultural background,
communication abilities, and socioeconomic needs.
- Develops, revises, and/or reviews educational materials.
- Attends collaborative care meetings, team rounds, patient care
conferences, unit council meetings, and advisory groups as required and
requested.
- Contacts the prescriber/provider/physician as necessary for clarification
of orders, and/or to recommend appropriate therapy and monitoring to
ensure patient safety, best outcome, and cost effective therapy.
Qualifications
Education:
- After January 1, 2024 - Master's degree in dietetics or degree that meets
the requirements of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Individuals credentialed as Registered Dietitians prior to January 1, 2024
are eligible with a Bachelor's degree in dietetics or degree that meets the
requirements of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Experience:
- Successful completion of an internship, coordinated undergraduate
program, or post graduate program accredited by the Academy of Nutrition
and Dietetics.
- One year experience as an acute clinical dietitian for entry level practice preferred.
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Lic Dietitian - Must hold a current license or certification specific to the state of employment IADHHS - Iowa Department of Health and Human Services
- Reg Dietitian CDR - Commission on Dietetic Registration
