The Food & Nutrition Services department has an opening for an Assistant Director. The ideal candidate is an organized, adaptable leader with a strong knowledge of food service operations and child nutrition programs who can communicate effectively, manage multiple priorities, and ensure compliance while maintaining high standards of customer service. He/she is a hands-on team player who supports staff, improves operations, and promotes a positive, efficient work environment.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Food Service Management or Dietetics
  • Registered Dietitian Preferred

Minimum Qualifications and Credentials Required:

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and policies governing child nutrition programs
  • ServSafe Certified
  • Valid Driver's License

  • Has excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with students, parents, school administrators, employees, vendors and public/private agencies

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, implement, and oversee food safety and sanitation procedures. Conduct regular site checks.
  • Make recommendations for improvement. Report findings to the Director.
  • Oversee and coordinate the daily operation of the corporation's food service program.
  • Act as a fill-in manager when a manager is off work.
  • Train new employees and managers (working with the site supervisor if applicable).
  • Plan menus and conduct student surveys to determine customer satisfaction.
  • Enter menus into nutrient analysis software to make sure they are compliant.
  • Assist the Director of Food Service in processing and verifying free and reduced applications.
  • Monitor food production, inventory, ordering, and handle all communication with vendors.
  • Preparation of production records, including standards for quantity, quality, and nutrition for food prepared and served.
  • Assist Director of Food Service in state and federal guidelines pertaining to Child Nutrition Programs.
  • Analyze participation and look for way to constantly improve the program.
  • Menu a la carte items that meet Smart Snacks rule.
  • Responsible for creating order guide templates, checking, monitoring, and releasing food and non-food orders.
  • Assist with bid development and specification writing, cost analysis of products and price comparisons.
  • Coordinate and track all commodity needs and orders to be delivered and distributed to all schools on a monthly basis.
  • Assist in organizing and planning food service manager meetings and training workshops.
  • Conduct professional standards training when needed
  • Work with individual employees on work simplification, establishing a daily routine and cross training in other areas to streamline operations.
  • Assist with catering, special functions and vending orders, invoicing; and assist with events as needed.
  • Monitor and update district food service website (Health-e Pro).
  • Monitor and update the Command Center on Smart Temps website.
  • Assist with data entry and analysis for Health-e Pro.
  • Plan and create nutrition lesson plans for classroom education.
  • Create monthly printed menus for staff and students.
  • Create standardized recipes and menus that comply with USDA Meal Pattern using Health-e ProMenu Planning System.
  • Monitor use of standardized recipes in all schools.
  • Assist with recipe tasting, product sampling and upkeep of food service recipe binders. All recipes must be HACCP compliant and allergen specific.
  • Create special diet menus for students.
  • Assist in a corporation wellness plan. Attend all wellness committee meetings.
  • Create and plan school promotions and themed menu days.
  • Provide labor coverage at schools when necessary.
  • Travel between schools via motor vehicle
  • Plan, implement, and oversee food safety and sanitation procedures. Conduct regular site checks.
  • Make recommendations for improvement. Report findings to the Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Food Service.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 50% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard-free environment.
