Job Summary

The Director of Child Nutrition oversees all aspects of the district-wide Child Nutrition Program (CNP). Responsible for administering, planning, directing, assessing, implementing, and evaluating the program to meet the nutritional needs of students. All duties are performed in coordination with the Business Administrator. The Director ensures program integrity, customer satisfaction, and compliance with all federal, state, and local guidelines, including OSHA, Utah Department of Agriculture & Food (UDAF) and Board of Health directives.

Essential Functions

Program Leadership: Establish and implement a district-wide customer service philosophy focused on value, satisfaction, and quality standards for food presentation.

Operational Oversight: Develop and ensure efficient procedures for food production, distribution, and waste management systems.

Compliance & Safety: Ensure CNP compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations. Establish procedures for sanitation, food safety, and risk management.

Financial Management: Monitor and manage allocated budgets and implement cost-effective procurement and inventory systems.

Strategic Planning: Develop short and long-range goals through strategic planning that support the philosophy and policies of the Board of Education.

Menu & Nutrition: Develop cost-effective menus that maintain nutritional integrity and meet federal guidelines, including accommodations for children with special nutrition needs.

Collaboration: Work with school staff, parents, physicians, and District departments to provide nutrition education and support.

Facility Planning: Assist in designing and planning facilities to ensure high-quality service and efficient workflow.

Emergency Management: Develop guidelines for providing food services in response to disaster or emergency situations.

Technology Integration: Implement and train staff in management information systems to increase productivity and efficiency.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Working knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Program regulations and state school finance laws.

Knowledge of sanitation and food safety requirements (OSHA, Board of Health, and Risk Management).

Skill in large-scale food production, cost estimating, and procurement.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and industry-specific management software.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with the Board, administration, media, and patrons.

Ability to manage tight deadlines and multiple projects concurrently in a fast-paced environment

Required Training and Education

Meet one of the following education requirements:

Bachelor's degree with academic major or concentration in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field

Bachelor's degree with any academic major or area of concentration, and a State- recognized certificate for school nutrition directors

Bachelor's degree in any major and at least 5 years of experience in management of school nutrition programs.

A valid Utah Driver'sLicense.

A minimum of eight (8) hours of food safety training is required to be completed within 30 days of start day, or no more than five years old if completed prior to start date.

Required Prior Experience

Five (5) years of experience in charge of food preparation or five (5) years of child nutrition regulatory experience.

Two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.

Experience in a large, central kitchen environment or catering large-scale events preferred.

Assigned Decision Making

Makes decisions regarding budget allocations.

Provides direction in developing short and long-range planning procedures and implementing these procedures.

Non-Supervisory Interaction

Advise administrators and secretaries in all District departments and schools.

Interact with patrons and the media.

Present child nutrition information to the Board of Education and respond to their questions frequently throughout the year.

Work closely with the other departments in Business Services throughout the year.

Supervisory Responsibility

Implements personnel policies and procedures for the child nutrition department according to local, state, and federal regulations and laws.

Supervises a diverse staff of professionals and support personnel, which may include:

Area Supervisors and Dietitians.

Warehouse and Logistics Managers.

Production Managers and Kitchen Lead staff.

Administrative Assistants and Bookkeepers.

Directly directs contracted professionals or consultants during facility design or program audits.

Budget Responsibility

Responsible for developing, forecasting, and monitoring the annual Nutrition Services budget, totaling approximately $40,933,034 annually.

Oversees expenditures related to federal and state grants and ensures compliance with reimbursement processes.

Working Environment

Environment: Duties performed in office settings, central kitchen facilities, and school cafeterias. Requires travel to various school sites throughout the District.

Demands: Frequently required to stand, walk, and reach. Must be able to lift and move a minimum of 50 pounds.
